The American who speaks French

December 17, 2011
Greetings again, everyone!
Not much to report on since my last post, we’ve been at sea for the past few days—we even cancelled our stop in the Bay of Islands due to some nasty weather so we’ve pretty much had three days at sea. Yesterday was pretty rocky, too, we had swells of about 6 meters high, or so they say, so we were all feeling the effects pretty harshly. Luckily the seas are much calmer today and the weather is a nice 70 degrees or so—so working at the Rock Wall this afternoon was a nice time out in the sun soaking up some Vitamin D and enjoying the warmth.
Tonight we’ve got the first performance of our Christmas show, which the guests on this cruise are getting to see as a sneak preview, then tomorrow we will be in Sydney and we’ll say goodbye to one of our stage staff—Adrian, the Romanian. I will certainly miss that kid! But, now I have someone to go visit in Romania, should I ever be inspired to go there.
We will leave Sydney around 5pm tomorrow and set out on our 16 day Christmas cruise which will have all of us running around like crazy. I will be on duty for the middle 5 days of the cruise which will be kind of nice since it’s mostly port days, but it also means that I’m on duty on Christmas Day. Hopefully I won’t be running around like a crazy person on Christmas Day!
I’ve got all the presents that I’m giving to the Black Shirts (my team) all wrapped and ready to go to give them on Christmas. I’m hoping that tomorrow when we get to Sydney I’ll have my Under Armour and my black Converse shoes in the mail, that will be like an early Christmas for me, then I’ll have the cards and little gifts from back home to open on Christmas morning!
Otherwise, things have been going pretty smoothly around here. I am feeling a little lonely and homesick now with Christmas coming up, and I’m wishing that I had my friends and family around with me! But I know you’re all going to have a great holiday season, wherever you’re celebrating it, and I will do my best to make the proper phone calls as my schedule allows! Remember that I’ll be having Christmas a day before y’all, and New Year’s, too! But, like I said, I’ll do my best, loved ones.
I just finished watching the movie “The Help” which I had seen this summer (with Daniella!) but I downloaded it and watched it again—it’s such a good movie. If you haven’t seen it yet, definitely put it on your Netflix or go get it from a Red Box or something! One of my favorite quotes from the movie is this: “You is kind, you is smart, you is important.” Remember that, my loves, all of you.
You is kind. You is smart. You is important.
I miss you all very dearly.

December 18, 2011
Just a short post to tell you all a few funny stories about my day before I forget them!
So I got off the ship for about an hour or so today and walked around a market and got some lunch and then sat in a park to eat said lunch and read “Eat, Pray, Love” (which I borrowed from the ship’s library). Well, this park is right next to the harbor so you can see the water, the Opera House, and the ship of course…but that also means there are about a million seagulls flocking about (pun intended!). So I sit down with my little bag of groceries and I bust out my sandwich, and slowly these gulls start ganging up on me, staring me down, trying to get me to toss them some food. Well, I was smart enough not to succumb to their gaze and I kept shooing them away, but they were squawking and I was having flashbacks to “Finding Nemo” and the whole “Mine! Mine! Mine!” seagulls scene. Funny stuff.
Story number two is that as I was sitting on this park bench enjoying my lunch and reading my book, a family came along and sat beside me to also eat a picnic lunch and watch the world go by. I paid no attention to them and kept along with my business…and then the family started speaking French! And I said to myself “Do I have some sort of way of attracting French-speaking people, or what?!” So I sat there awhile listening to them, and due to the noise of the surroundings I couldn’t really hear much but I knew for 100% certain that they were speaking French. I kept reading and thought about talking to them, but, I didn’t honestly feel like striking up a conversation, so, I let them be but enjoyed the fact that they probably had no clue that I could understand them! After a while they moved along and went somewhere else….and they were replaced by yet another family….
Now, this family consisted of younger people, and one woman wearing a (somewhat tacky) t-shirt that was pink and white and had an Eiffel Tower on the front of it made out of little pink and green flowers. I chuckled a little at this, and presumed them to be tourists because, in my experience, French people don’t enjoy wearing clothing with the Eiffel Tower on it. However, lo and behold, after a few moments (and even after they’d been speaking English to each other) the woman in said tacky shirt began speaking French!! I won’t lie to you folks, I honestly started laughing. Now, I laughed and kept on looking at my book so that passersby would presume me to be laughing at my book, but, no, I was just laughing at the sheer improbability of TWO French-speaking families sitting down next to me on a park bench in Sydney, Australia within a span of about an hour. Now, after having neglected to speak to the first family, I was mustering up the words to introduce myself to this family, when I looked down at my watch and realized that I had to get back to the ship and didn’t really have time for a conversation. Oops! So, I lost another opportunity there, but, the whole situation was just pretty funny.
Luckily for me, I still have my new friend Bernard who works in the Explorations! Department and is a native French speaker (he’s not French, but, he lives on an island that was once owned by France near Madagascar) so I can talk to him whenever I want. I also met one of the guests from France last cruise during the backstage tour—he saw the French flag on my name badge and was pleasantly surprised. We talked for a little, I found out he lives in the Côte d’Azur and I told him I lived in Angers for a while and he seemed pleased, he asked me when I started learning French…y’know, the usual questions, but, it was really nice. It’s always the best when they say “You speak French so well! You don’t even really have an American accent when you do it!” Nice to know my hard work has paid off! And that I haven’t lost much of it!
That brings me to another thing: the conversations I have about this French flag on my name tag always open with “You speak French?” “I sure do!” “Where are you from?” “The United States” “You’re from the US and you speak French?” (always with a tone of utter surprise) “Yeah, I know, I’m a weirdo.” “No, you just don’t find many Americans who speak another language…and if they do, it’s Spanish!” “Yes, I know, like I said, I am a weirdo. But, I’m proud of it!” And then the conversation moves on from there. People, French or otherwise, really don’t think too highly of education and culture in the US…this is what I’m discovering living here on the floating United Nations of sorts. Don’t mistake me and think that I’m saying people don’t like Americans, because I find that people have no problem with us, they just don’t think we have a whole lot to offer in the culture department. And you want to disagree, then you see how our fast food chains have taken over all the major (and some minor) cities and you see people even down here in Oz wearing Steelers’ paraphernalia and it’s like “Oh…well…maybe they’re right… American football and greasy food is seemingly what we’ve given the world?” Now, please don’t bring up how we help people in wars and things, I’m not talking politics here, I’m simply rambling on about what I’ve noticed about the general American Stereotype as seen through the eyes of an American living amongst people from 65+ different countries and visiting places that are strikingly similar to the USA in some ways and vastly different in others. I think America has more to offer than people realize, but, it’s all about what people realize, am I right?
Think about it yourselves, ask yourself what you think when you think about France, Italy, England, Canada, China, Indonesia, India, Romania, *insert any other foreign country here*--and ask yourself why you think that about that country? Is it because you’ve been there so you know what that place is like? Or do you think that because that’s what you’ve heard? And if you’d heard that about a place and then went there and found it to be different, were you surprised? Or was it exactly as you thought it would be?
Anyways, before I keep going on and possibly talking myself into a very small corner, I think I will leave all of you to chew on that bone. Maybe my ramble didn’t even make sense…it probably didn’t….sorry if it doesn’t…or if it offends…or if you disagree. But, anyways there it is. I am not going to go back and re-read it to see if I make any sense, I typed it as I thought it…kind  of a stream of consciousness thing of sorts (oh no, Mrs. Dalloway! Right, Cathryn? :P) (Sorry folks, that’s a joke for Cathryn, anyone who isn’t Cathryn can ignore that last bit).
That’s all for now, have a show to do tonight and then we break in the new guy by setting up our first Production Show that will be on tomorrow night! Welcome aboard, new guy! Apparently he lives about 10 minutes from the dock which means we might all have a fun place to party when we’re here on overnights, YES! Let’s hope that that ends up being true!
Love y’all,
B

"Faithfully"

December 13, 2011
Hello, hello, hello!
Once again I will apologize for going AWOL for a while, been pretty busy with Christmas coming up and it’s only going to get worse.
It’s been an interesting cruise so far, we left Sydney and made our way down here to New Zealand and we’ve been visiting the same ports we’ve visited before.
I bought everyone in my little department their Christmas gifts already! They are all like “Oh….we didn’t get you anything….derp” and I tell them it’s ok that I enjoy buying presents and they don’t have to feel obligated. I just love Christmas!!
Cultural observation time!
            - Aussies and Kiwis leave their trash EVERYWHERE when they eat in fast food places. Forget about “Trash Here, Trays Here”, nope, it’s just a free-for-all. Then some poor bloke has to come along with a big trash bag and throw it all away himself. That hardly seems sanitary to me. I mean, they do have the trashcans there to throw things away yourselves, but, nobody seems to do that. I found this to be true at a McDonald’s in Sydney and a Wendy’s in Auckland.
            - No matter how much we (as the entertainment staff) think an act sucks or isn’t too great, the guests LOVE THEM. Our ratings for the last cruise were SKY HIGH, which is a good thing on one hand, but, it means harder goals for next year…oops! Double-edged sword!

I think that’s all my mind can come up with at the moment, so, hope you enjoyed those two little tidbits!
I am running out of time on my internet though so I will bid you all adieu with this short post but, to quote the great Journey song, I am “sending all my love across the wire”!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

December 4, 2011
Hello again everyone! Let’s see what’s happened since I last updated you!
The first thing I should tell you about is the interesting thing that happened on our second sea day on our way to Sydney we had to take a detour from our course to an island in the northern Tasman sea called Lord Howe Island because a guest on board had a medical emergency. We were set to arrive there around 9:30am and on the way we passed something that’s known as “Ball’s Pyramid”. This “pyramid” is part of a volcano that formed 7 million years ago and has mostly completely disappeared except for this remaining part that sticks 3,600 feet out of the sea. It was SO COOL looking! Check out my Facebook for the photos—you can’t see the whole thing because it was so cloudy and rainy, but, you can tell how it’s just this random giant piece of rock that sticks out of the water and comes to a point at the top. It was also very rocky seas, probably the rockiest we’ve had so far! I was getting dizzy and had to take sea-sickness pill to try to alleviate that!

Anyways, we arrived in Sydney yesterday and we are leaving tomorrow night to head to New Zealand again. Last night a bunch of us went out to a club in Darling Harbour called “Home”—it’s a big four story building with lots of dancing and bars and such. It was a pretty good time, I was waiting outside the club for about half an hour for Brian to show up and in the meantime I was chatting up this cute Kiwi security guard (Kiwi means he’s from New Zealand, in case you forgot). Also on the walk home Brian and I were walking in front of three guys who, after a minute or two, I realized were speaking French! So I had an internal debate of whether or not I should talk to them, knowing that of course I should, but, being a little bit intimidated. So we continued walking for a bit until they ended up in front of us somehow and one was lagging behind because he was sending a text message so I kind of upped my pace, met up with him, and proceeded to ask if they were from France. He replied with “Yes! And you?” and the conversation continued from there! I found out that they were backpacking around New Zealand/ Australia and that they were in New Zealand during the Rugby world cup—how cool right?! They’re from a small town near Grenoble in France…**drool**. Eventually they were turning right and we were turning left so the conversation was over, but, I was very pleased with myself. Brian was also very impressed, maha, #winning.

Like I said, we leave Sydney tomorrow night so tomorrow morning I am planning on getting off around 9 or 9:30 and then investigating the purchase of a pair of UGG Moccasin Slippers (NOT BOOTS) and then I am going to go to the Opera House and possibly take the tour and then use the free internet that I’ve heard they have to post this blog post! Then I have to be back on the ship by 2pm to be a part of an acupuncture demonstration (means I get it for free since I let people watch, yes!) and then to work the rest of the day.

Also, there is a big Christmas tree and tons of decorations all over the ship and I love it :) There's a huge Gingerbread village, also! I will take photos of it ASAP :)

Hope all is well!

Nick! Is that Dunkin' Donuts real or is it a mirage?!

November 29, 2011

I had a very successful day in Auckland today!

Nick, the light technician, and I got off the ship around 10am and started off on our mission to find his girlfriend some good birthday/Christmas presents (her birthday is December 12). We wandered around for a while and thankfully our mission was successful, and I was able to get something for my mom, too! Then we kept walking around and had lunch, but my lunch wasn’t very good—I ordered a Hawaiian Pizza but the pineapple wasn’t sweet at all and there were surprise onions in the pizza! Those of you that know me well will know that there isn’t much that I hate more than onions, yuck yuck yuck. They were in big slices, thankfully, but then some were hidden under the cheese and I took a bite of one and gagged a little, I just hate them so much! So that was a sad moment for me, but, oh well,  you live and learn!

We continued our aimless journey of the main streets of Auckland and what oh what did I find? Well, ladies and gentlemen, I came across a small little store that you might have heard of called Dunkin’ Donuts! Sure, there are McDonald’s everywhere and I’ve seen Burger Kings in the bigger cities, but, not yet had I seen a Dunkin’ Donuts! They have a similar chain called King Donut (or something to that effect) but no, this was a real life Dunkin’ Donuts! America runs on Dunkin’, and so does Auckland, apparently. It was, ironically enough, located next to an EB Games and a block away from a Wendy’s!! My mind was absolutely blown. I decided that I wouldn’t be that tourist and eat at both of those establishments in one day (DD and Wendy’s) but that I would pace myself…and seeing as how I can’t get bagels and DD iced coffee on board I went with DD and what a great choice that was. Happy Brittany was happy!

Next we went and found the base of the Sky Tower (see my Facebook for photos) and we were going to go up to the top but it was $25 and we didn’t feel like spending that money. Instead we (I) took a photo with the small replica of the tower that they had near the escalators and saw some burly men setting up Christmas decorations (again, see the photos on my Facebook).  After all that we made our way back to the ship to get to work for an hour or so and now I’m off again until 6:45pm, and I think my body is begging for a nap.

Take care of yourselves, everyone, and as the winter comes upon most of you, try not to picture me in flip flops and a t-shirt on Christmas ;)

December 1, 2011

Well, kids, it’s already December! It’s hard for me to believe that fact…and the fact that I’ve been on the ship for two months now. It’s truly amazing the differences I feel now from what I felt in the early days. I knew that of course I’d find my way around and that I’d get the hang of things and I’m just happy to see that that actually came true. This voyage I did all of our production shows without my run sheets (aka the sheets that tell me what each of my cues are during each show) which is pretty nice, and I am feeling more and more confident when guests ask me where things are and even new crew members.

I won’t be writing much tonight because I’ve got a Latin Night party to go to in the Crew Bar. The party is actually a fundraiser for one of the Facilities guys who had to go home several weeks ago because his daughter was killed in a car accident. The company doesn’t consider that emergency enough to pay for his ticket home so he had to pay around $4,000 out of his own pocket to get home to his family and he isn’t paid anywhere near that on the ship. So the Adventure Ocean manager has been organizing ways to raise money for Barrie to give to him to help pay for the ticket and so the orchestra members are playing in the crew bar and people are encouraged to bring money to donate to the cause. If every crew member donated $5 it would come out to $4,500, so that’s what they’re shooting for.

Speaking of car accidents, as a few of you know my hip has been bothering me a bit more and more this past month. I spoke to the doctor on board the other day and he explained that if it’s arthritis already developing then there’s nothing they can really do about it on board and so he gave me super-strength ibuprofen and it’s been helping a little bit but not greatly.  I am worried that it is indeed arthritis and that I won’t be able to do the ship thing for a long time because I’ll need to be home where I can be treated for the problem as needed—whether that’s with steroid injections (which is what this doctor said) or by getting my hip replaced sooner rather than later. Ugh. I am trying to stay positive and optimistic about these things but it’s really hard sometimes!

Anyways, Lauren is out of the shower so I’m going to go hop in and then go to Latin night. More to come soon my dears.

My life is pretty sweet

November 28, 2011

Life is pretty much getting into a rhythm now so that’s why I’m inclined to blog less, I think! We are on the tail-end of our first of many trips to the same ports here in New Zealand and it’s been nice to be able to get off, see what the towns are like, and then know for the next time we’re there where to go and what to do. Today we were in Tauranga which is on the northern end of the top island of New Zealand and tomorrow we will be in Auckland again—we were there when we made the first crossing down here. Either the next time we are in Tauranga (Dec. 13) or the time after that (Dec. 28) we are going to go White Water Rafting and I’m excited for that but I am also scared out of my mind! There are allegedly 7m waterfalls and such that you go over and if you sit in the back you’re more likely to get tossed out so…I told the guys that I call dibs on a front seat!

It’s been a relaxing time off for me, normally when I’m not on Assist or Duty I have Rockwall shifts and also Spotlight shifts for the shows each night. Well, since we’ve been in ports we don’t have Rockwall every day so that’s been one less thing for me to deal with, and we’ve had production shows and some easy headliner shows so doing spots hasn’t been too bad, either! Lucky me!

We are coming up on our awesome 2 night overnight in Sydney that everyone is pretty excited about. We will arrive in Sydney on December 3rd at 9:00am and then we leave on December 5th at 6:30pm. I’m not sure what we’re all going to try to do but we have nothing scheduled in the theatre on the night of the 3rd, which is great because normally we’d have our farewell show that night and then the guests leave on December 4th but since it’s an overnight they just put a movie in the theatre. That means we can all go out to dinner and pretty much do whatever we want…except for the person who is on duty, poor guy.  I’ve been there twice already, it’s not too awesome knowing that everyone is going out and you have to be stuck on the ship with nothing to do that night!

So I think a few of you appreciated the itinerary that I posted on here so that you all know where I am in the world each day, ergo, here is my itinerary for December and the first part of January:

So, unless anything changes that’s where I’ll be and when! Nothing should change because the company already knows the New Zealand ports now and so the only weird thing could end up being the ports in Vanuatu and New Caledonia (islands in the Pacific), so, we’ll see!

Otherwise I guess I don’t have much to add! I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and I’m looking forward to receiving Christmas packages and cards (**hint hint**)! Just in case you don’t have these addresses anymore or at all, here is some VERY VITAL INFORMATION for you :D

Send valuable things and packages bigger than shoeboxes to:
(My first and last name go here)
Technical Stage Staff
Radiance of the Seas
2935 West Corporate Lakes Blvd
Weston, FL 33331

And send letters or cards and tiny packages to:
(My first and last name go here)
Technical Stage Staff
Radiance of the Seas
P.O Box 019081
Miami, FL 33101-9081

Maybe it’s weird for me not to put my full name on here since there’s enough information on this blog for someone to find my identity if they really want to, but, I will make it a little bit harder for them at least, haha! Also make sure to always put a return address on anything because if you don’t they will look at it suspiciously and it may not make it to me. Keep in mind also that things will take anywhere from 2-6 weeks to get out here from Miami, so, don’t send anything time-sensitive or perishable! Chocolate is ok, I can still eat a melted blob of chocolate, teehee.

Okay, I think this post is sufficiently long enough!

Love you all so much!
